What have we learned in 2020? Countless things have been learned, some more important than others, but the myth of certainty is what jumps out at me. Without thinking we fall into that murky trap; we are creatures of habit after all. And sometimes, somehow, life does seem to perk along. Weeks and months on end produce a familiar rhythm, one we grow to depend on. One we claim for ourselves. But we can’t “own” time or energy or circumstances or any of the other factors that contribute to our daily routines, can we?

After all, nature, the seasons, other people, and innumerable global factors impact our daily lives in unpredictable waves–often when least expected. A pandemic wasn’t on the calendar last year. For a variety of factors, it simply happened. And we felt shock waves for months on end. I’m not sure anyone ever gets used to something as powerful as a pandemic. Many are merely waiting for the day when this experience becomes “historical” as opposed to “current,” and then, surely, we muse … our lives will revert to more “normal times” as though it never happened, right?

If we’re lucky, though, we’ll have learned a lot about the myth of certainty during this time. We will have a new appreciation for change and surprise and the more unpredictable facets of life. Maybe we’ll even begin to live our lives with greater flexibility and balance. What do you think?
