“Most of us have two lives. The life we live, and the unlived life within us. Between the two stands Resistance.”

― Steven Pressfield

Resistance is often the name of the game as we transition from the end of one year to the next. The dynamic may be a habit, or perhaps, we’re dragging our heels for good reason. Sometimes the start of a new year feels like standing at the bottom of a steep hill we have to climb. We feel tired, unprepared, so we resist. Maybe we procrastinate. For good reason, too. New goals to establish, special or difficult projects to begin, complex changes we need to complete in the new calendar year, approaching deadlines–all of these can create anxiety and, therefore, resistance.

“If you’re are paralyzed with fear it’s a good sign. It shows
you what you have to do.” ― Steven Pressfield

Is there a more comfortable path forward–a viable strategy for countering feelings of dread or angst or worry that naturally seem to surface as we take on a brand new year? Do you have a tried and true method for handling negative emotions that often prevent accomplishment and waste time and precious energy? Or do many of us just struggle through, patiently waiting for our motivation to return? The drive to move forward can be illusive. I’ve experienced it, so have you. Sometimes, like a gift, it’s just there, but other times we are strangely reluctant to take proactive steps into the unknown, to envision a path that hasn’t quite materialized yet. Indecision comes into play–maybe a stubborn dip in our self-confidence exacerbates the situation, or we simply don’t feel prepared for the harsh demands of time.

“Resistance is the most toxic force on the planet.”

― Steven Pressfield, The War of Art: Winning the Inner Creative Battle

Do we just want to sit on a bench and ponder life for a time … even
though the world seems to expect us to get moving?

Regardless of our trepidation, excitement, indecision … 2022 is here. Embrace it. Know that challenges will arise, but we need challenges to test ourselves, to grow and evolve. Surprises will occur–some we’ll love, some we may despise and resist. This is the nature of the universe. There will be progress made; there will be setbacks. Grandiose plans will be made, but not all will materialize. Time will move quickly, even when we refuse to leave a comfortable couch, a bench that provides solitude and respite, or a table in our favorite coffee shop. Acknowledge the swiftness of life. Remember that each new year is a mix of up and down, good and bad. What’s in store for you this year? What is waiting for your attention and love? What needs to be left behind? What will you do with your creative energy, your dreams?

Warm wishes for the journey! ~
